Hītoria

 Tauranga Moana, Tauranga Tangata. 

I te tau ruamano, (2000) i tīmata te Rumaki i runga i te hiahia a ngā whānau ki te pupuri i ngā āhuatanga o te Ao Māori. Kia akohia e ngā uri i tō rātou reo Māori, kia pupuri i ngā tikanga a kui mā, a koro mā. Kia mōhio ki  te hītori o te kura o Peterehema me ngā pūrākau o ngā hapu e toru, me te ako i ngā waiata o Tauranga Moana, Tauranga Tangata. 

Iwi

He kura manaaki tō mātou kura. He kura e honoa ki ngā iwi e toru o roto o Tauranga Moana – ko Ngāti Ranginui, Ngai te Rangi me Ngāti Pukenga. 

Hapu

Ko te whānau Rumaki te whatumanawa o tō mātou kura nā te mea ka honoa e ngā uri o te whānau Rumaki  ki ngā hapu o Ngāti Kahu, o Ngāti Hangarau me Ngai Tamarāwaho. Ka honoa hoki ki ngā iwi maha o te motu. 

Ahakoa he kura auraki, ko te whānau Rumaki nei kei te pupuri  i ngā tumanako o a mātou mātua, kuia, koroua me ngā pākeke o Ngāti Kahu, o Ngāti Hangarau me Ngai Tamarāwaho.  

Whānau / Kaiako 

Ko ngā whānau me ngā Kaiako ngā kaihāpai ki te whakatipu i ngā tikanga me ngā wawata o, ō mātou mātua tīpuna. 

Kohanga Reo

Ka honoa e mātou ki te Kōhanga Reo o Ngāti Kahu, te Kōhanga Reo o Ngāti Hangarau me te Kōhanga Reo o Huria. 

Kaiāwhina

Kei a mātou tētahi kaiāwhina, ko tāna mahi ki te whakatipu i te reo o ngā ākonga kei te ako tonu i te reo Māori,  ki te tiaki i ngā tamariki hou kātahi anō ka tīmata te kura mai te Kōhanga Reo.

Tikanga me ngā Karakia

He Rumaki e whakapono ana ki ngā tikanga me ngā karakia, ahakoa te hāhi ā, he Rumaki e ngākau nui ana ki ngā whakapono katoa ahakoa te aha. 

Ngā Akomanga

 E toru ngā akomanga, ko ngā kōhungahunga – tau 0, tau 1, tau 2, ko ngā takawaenga tau 3, tau 4 me ngā tuakana tau 5, tau 6. 

Kaupapa

Ka whaiahia e tātou i ngā kaupapa Māori. Ia tau ka haere a Te Paeroa ki te marae o Wairoa me te marae o Hangarau, whakawhanaunga ai, te whakatau wairua, te hono ki te whenua, te rongo ki ngā pūrākau me te nohotahi me ngā whānau o Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hangarau.

I waenganui o te tau ka huri haere ki ngā marae kei raro i te marumaru o Ngāti Ranginui. 

Te Reo Māori

Ko te reo e kawe ana i ngā mahi katoa. 

Te whakaurunga – Huarahi Uru

Ka whakauru mai te tauira ki Te Paeroa mā te reo Māori. 

Mehemea kua kuraina ki te Kōhanga Reo, Rūmaki Māori, Kura Kaupapa, Kura ā Iwi ka uiui ki te taha o te Pouārahi o te Rūmaki, kātahi ka haere tōtika ki te karaehe mō tōu reanga. 

Mehehea kei te ako tonu i te reo Māori, kei a mātou he karaehe paku mō ngā ākonga hei whakatipu reo ki te taha o tō mātou kaiāwhina. A tōna wā ka piri ki te karaehe mō tōu reanga. 

Pōhiri

Ka pōhiri mātou ki ngā ākonga hou i te tīmatanga o ia wāhanga. 

Mehemea kua whakaae mai e te Tumuaki/Tumuaki Tuarua ki tāu tono, ka tīmata i te wā kua whakaritea mā tōu tamaiti. 

Whakatau

Ka whakatau mātou ki ngā ākonga hou mehemea kua kuraina mai ngā kōhanga o Ngāti Kahu me Ngāti Hangarau.

History 

Tauranga Moana, Tauranga Tangata (Tauranga is the sea, Tauranga is the people).

In the year 2000, the Rumaki – Māori immersion unit  was established out of the families’ desire to retain aspects of Te Ao Māori. This was so that the descendants could learn their Māori language and uphold the customs and traditions set by their ancestors. Furthermore, it was so they would know the history of Bethlehem School, the stories of the three hapū (sub-tribes), and learn the songs of Tauranga Moana, Tauranga Tangata.

Iwi (Tribes) 

Our school is a caring and supportive school. It is a school that is connected to the three iwi (tribes) within the Tauranga Moana region – Ngāti Ranginui, Ngāi Te Rangi, and Ngāti Pūkenga. 

Hapū (Sub-tribes) 

The Rumaki – immersion unit is the heartbeat of our school because the descendants of the Rumaki whānau are connected to the hapū (sub-tribes) of Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hangarau, and Ngāi Tamarāwaho. They are also connected to many tribes across the country.

Even though it is a mainstream school, the Rumaki whānau upholds the hopes and aspirations of our parents and elders of Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hangarau, and Ngāi Tamarāwaho.

Whānau / Kaiako (Families / Teachers) 

The families and teachers are the guardians who nurture and sustain the customs and aspirations of our ancestors. 

Kōhanga Reo (Māori Language Preschools) 

We are connected to the three Kōhanga Reo,  Ngāti Kahu, Ngāti Hangarau, and Huria. 

Kaiāwhina (Teacher Assistant / Support Staff) We have a kaiāwhina whose role is to develop the language of the students who are still learning the Māori language, and to support the new children who have just started school from the Kōhanga Reo (Māori language preschool). 

Tikanga me ngā Karakia 

We are a Rumaki (Level One- Immersion Unit) that acknowledges and practices traditional customs and karakia.

Ngā Akomanga (Classrooms / Year Levels) 

There are three classrooms: the kōhungahunga (junior/early years) – years 0, 1, and 2; the takawaenga (middle years) – years 3 and 4; and the tuakana (senior years) – years 5 and 6. 

Kaupapa (Principles / Initiative / Subject) 

We are involved in and participate or follow Māori events and occasions within Tauranga Moana, and where possible outside of our local area. 

Each year, Te Paeroa visits Wairoa Marae and Hangarau Marae to build relationships, connect with the land, listen to traditional stories, and spend time together with the families of Ngāti Kahu and Ngāti Hangarau.

Where opportunity allows, we build connections with other marae within Ngāti Ranginui Iwi. 

Te Reo Māori (The Māori Language) 

The language underpins all of our activities. 

Te Whakaurunga – Huarahi Uru (Enrolment – Entry Pathway) 

Students enter Te Paeroa either having started their te reo Māori journey or have a desire to learn te reo. 

If they have been educated at a Kōhanga Reo, Rūmaki Māori (Māori immersion unit), Kura Kaupapa (Māori-medium school), or Kura ā Iwi (iwi-based school), an interview will be held with the Pouārahi (Leader) of the Rūmaki, and then they will go straight into the class for their age group.

If they are beginning their Māori language learning journey, students may have timetabled opportunities to develop their language in a small group setting supported by our kaiāwhina (teacher assistant).

Pōhiri (Formal Welcome Ceremony) We formally welcome all new ākonga at the beginning of each school year. After the first schoolwide pōhiri, we host either a Te Paeroa-based pōhiri for ākonga and whānau outside of Ngāti Kahu or Ngāti Hangarau or a whakatau (official welcome) for new tamariki who have previously been educated at the Kōhanga Reo of Ngāti Kahu or Ngāti Hangarau.
